Current Student-to-Staff Ratio

Spotlight for Career Services Professionals, February 1, 2012 

On average, the ratio of students to professional career services staff now stands at 1,645 students to each professional staff member, according to results of NACE’s latest benchmark survey. 

The 2011-12 Career Services Benchmark Survey also shows that the student to staff ratio is directly related to size of enrollment. The smaller the enrollment, the lower the ratio: On average, schools with fewer than 1,000 students have a 366:1 ratio, while the ratio at schools with more than 20,000 students is 5,876:1. 

The 2011-12 Career Services Benchmark Survey was conducted September 21, 2011, to December 9, 2011; 870 career centers participated. The survey report will be available shortly. Participants will receive a complimentary copy.

I think it would be helpful to provide the median because outliers can highly skew averages. Also, why not a crosstabs showing the difference of private vs. public in series of 5000 for example privates under 5000, 5001-1000, 1001 - 15000 etc.? Also location can be a huge factor. 30 4yr schools in Los Angeles are likely different than 30 schools in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, etc. Generic data giving averages with no filters is not that helpful sometimes.

I'm curious about the statistics here. According to these numbers, if you are a school of 30,000 students, the average staff size is 5 professional staff members, but if you are a school of less than 1,000 the average professional staff size is 3? This seems unlikely. At NACE conferences there are multiple large schools whose staff members present and show staff sizes much larger. I think a clarification of what a professional staff member is would be helpful. Also, does this factor in where the institution is quite large but Career Services is decentralized and each college career center has multiple professional staff members? Could use clarification for this to be a benefit to me.
