Numbers Drop for Virtual Internships

Spotlight for Career Services Professionals, January 18, 2012
Spotlight for Recruiting Professionals, January 18, 2012

While 12.5 percent of employers hired college students for virtual internships in 2011, the percentage of employers that anticipate hiring virtual interns in 2012 dropped to just 8.6, according to NACE’s 2012 Internship & Co-op Survey.

Also dropping was the median percentage of all internships at these firms that were virtual: from 7.5 percent in 2011 to an anticipated 3.5 percent in 2012.

One aspect of virtual internships that’s not expected to change for 2012: All responding employers plan to pay their virtual interns in 2012, just as they did in 2011.

NACE’s 2012 Internship & Co-op Survey was conducted from November 11, 2011, to January 13, 2012, among NACE employer members; 281, or 30 percent, took part. The survey report will be released in April.

I would be interested to know the reasons for this decrease, as well as special challenges for developing and implementing virtual internship. Were there open-ended questions on the survey that might provide a clue as to the reasons?
